Tailbone Pain

Tailbone pain, medically known as coccydynia, is a distinct and often debilitating discomfort in or around the coccyx – the small, triangular bone at the very bottom of your spine. While seemingly minor, this pain can profoundly impact your ability to sit, stand, and move comfortably, making everyday activities a challenge. At Dr. Patel Ortho Clinic, we understand the unique and often frustrating nature of tailbone pain. Our specialized approach focuses on precise diagnosis and targeted solutions to bring you lasting relief.
  • Rapid Weight Loss: Loss of natural cushioning in the buttock area.
  • Referred Pain: Pain originating from other spinal areas or pelvic conditions.
  • Idiopathic: Sometimes, the cause remains unknown, though effective treatment is still possible.
  • Trauma/Injury:

    • Falls: A direct fall onto the buttocks (e.g., slipping on ice, falling downstairs) is the most common cause.

    • Childbirth: Pressure on the coccyx during delivery can lead to injury or inflammation.

    • Repetitive Strain: Activities like cycling or rowing that put prolonged pressure on the tailbone.

  • Poor Posture: Prolonged sitting with improper posture, especially on hard surfaces, can strain the coccyx.

  • Degenerative Changes: Less commonly, wear and tear or arthritis in the coccygeal joints.
